BOYS BASKETBALL
McConnellsburg 77 Claysburg-Kimmel 36.  On February 14th, the Spartans (8-0 ICC South champions) defeated the Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs (5-3 ICC East champions) in the semi-finals of the Inter-County Conference championship at Claysburg-Kimmel High School.

The Spartans led throughout, outscoring the Bulldogs in each quarter, especially dominating the third. By the fourth quarter, with a 30-point lead, the mercy rule was applied, speeding up the game. The final score was 77-36, marking the Spartans’ 20th consecutive victory.

In the first half of quarter one, the Spartans and Bulldogs tossed goals back and forth.  By the quarter’s end, Brayden Ramsey had hit two three-pointers to bump the lead to 17-11. In the second quarter, the Spartans put on a small scoring run and by mid-quarter had stretched the lead to 11 points, 24-13.  At the half the Spartans maintained the double digit lead, 34-24.
For quarter three, here’s where the Spartans defense and resulting offensive connection showed well to their game performance and the visiting fans and booster’s appeal.  They made one three-pointer, but we responded with two consecutive threes.  We scored two points off an inbound steal, followed by two more on free throws with just two minutes into the quarter and broke it open to 42-27.  Two more minutes passed, and the Spartans increased their lead to 49-29. By quarter’s end the Spartans were up 59-31.
The fourth quarter started with a thrilling alley-oop from Hoyt Glenn to Ramsey, exciting the Spartan fans. With a 30-point lead one minute in, the mercy rule was invoked, and the clock ran continuously. Both coaches substituted their starters for second-string and bench players for the remaining five minutes. The Spartans defeated the Bulldogs more decisively than their previous January 3rd meeting, with a final score of 64-36.
The Spartans had three players scoring in double figures: Ramsey led all scorers with 23 points, Dom Jefferson added 16 points, and Glenn achieved a double-double with 13 points and ten assists.
The Spartans extended their performance to a 20-game win streak, with 20 wins by double digits and 8 wins by more than 40 points.  The Spartans’ regular season concluded earlier this week with an overall record of 20-1, 8-0 ICC South, and they are ranked at the top of the District 5 Class AA.
