BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 69, Altoona 29: The Mountain Lions made a bit of a run in the second quarter to get within 28-19, but from that point on, the Trojans outscored Altoona 41-10 and rolled to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on Friday night at CASHS Field House.
Chambersburg (12-4, 8-3 MPC) broke a two-game losing skid, while the Mountain Lions are 2-14 (1-10 MPC).
“I was really pleased with how we came out in the second half and played better defense,” said Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler, who is now one victory away from 400 wins for his career. “As a result of that, we got some easy baskets at he offensive end.”
Altoona played a 3-2 zone — a ploy that most teams are using now against the Trojans — that stymied Chambersburg a little in the first half. But the Trojans owned the boards and had 5 put-back buckets in the half. Plus, J.J. Kelly hit a pair of threes and had 12 points in the opening quarter.
Leading 34-19 at the half, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Colton Cornwell to end the half, it was 34-19.
In the third period, Chambersburg scored the first 9 points, and ended the quarter with a 16-4 run.
Shreffler said, “If we’re getting stops on defense, and we get down before they set up, then we don’t have to go against the zone. And we did a better job of getting the ball inside and then pass it outside for some good looks. And when we missed those shots we really got on the boards and got some second-chance points.”
The Trojans finished with 16 points directly on offensive rebounds.
Kelly ended up with 21 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers and four — count ’em, four — dunks, including the final slam that was an up, down, reverse doozy.
Cornwell hit four 3-pointers and had 17 points and four players had 6 points each — Josh Rudy, Ayden Silvestre, Landon Buhrman and Tyrell Hawkins.
