CHAMBERSBURG — The game went just about as expected, based on the records.
Chambersburg entered Saturday night’s home game in the Dunks for Drew showcase at CASHS Field House with a 7-2 record against very strong opponents. Shippensburg came in winless in 9 games.
The Trojans caused 11 turnovers in the first period, ran out to a 25-5 lead, and completed a 70-36 non-league win over the Greyhounds.
Ship ended up with 17 turnovers in the first half and 20 for the game, which bogged its offense down. The Hounds managed to put up only 13 shots in the first half and trailed 45-19.
Chambersburg’s defenders cut off passing lanes, over-played the man with the ball and got tips on a raft of Shippensburg passes, with many of the turnovers resulting in a Trojan score at the other end. The biggest beneficiary was J.J. Kelly, who was rolling in transition, scoring 19 of his 28 points in the first half.
Kelly also supplied the “dunks” for Drew, throwing down 3 of them. The first was a thunderous slam straight down the lane, the second came on a bounce pass off the backboard by Josh Rudy, and the third came when he stuffed in a put-back.
Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “I was happy with the way we came out and played — we did not go through the motions. Our defense dictated the game and it carried over to the offense. And the offense was pretty efficient.”
The Trojans hit 31 of 54 shots from the field (57.4%). Of the 12 players that got into the game, 11 of them scored, with Aedan Walker scoring his first points of the season. Colton Cornwell and Landon Buhrman each hit double figures, with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
For Shippensburg, which has only 2 senior starters, Noah Cornett tallied 11 points and Clay Myers added 7.
