BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 61, Altoona 32: In an afternoon matinee Friday in Altoona, the Trojans’ defense ruled in the first half, producing a 35-9 halftime advantage, on the way to a dominating Mid Penn Commonwealth victory.

Stanley Lozius

“It was an unusual game in which the varsity played first and it was played in front of their entire student body, which made for a great atmosphere,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “I thought we were really solid throughout the first half. Our defense led the way and we executed fairly well against their zone defense.”

J.J. Kelly scored 24 points, including 13 in the third period and Colton Cornwell tallied 10 of his 20 in the second period.

Shreffler said, “We got a really solid inside/outside punch from J.J. and Colt, but it was great to get contributions  from our entire lineup today. Things opened up a little more in the third and they cut into the lead, but by the beginning of the fourth, it became a running clock, so it was a fairly quick basketball game.”

Stanley Lozius added 7 points for the Trojans (5-1, 3-1 MPC).

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Altoona 64, Chambersburg 27: The Mountain Lions punished the Trojans in a brutal third period and took a commanding Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on Friday night at CASHS Field House.

Riley Evans

Altona led only 24-19 at the half against a Chambersburg missing a few players because of illness.

But in the decisive third quarter, the Mountain Lions held the Trojans (2-4, 1-3 MPC) scoreless, while piling up 24 points to bump their lead to 54-19.

Chambersburg coach Jamiur King said, “We were very much short-handed tonight, and Altoona is at the top of the division. They play fast and together. We have good spurts and possessions, and we will continue to work on expanding them. We started three freshmen tonight, so they are learning first-hand. Our growing pains will pay off.”

Riley Evans carried the Trojans, scoring 15 points and adding 17 rebounds.

“I sound like a broken record, but Riley continues to be our bright spot,” King said.
