CHAMBERSBURG — Mid Penn Commonwealth opponents Chambersburg and Gettysburg both believe they have solid wrestling lineups, with not many weak spots.
Thursday’s match at CASHS Field House proved that point. It also proved that right now, the Warriors are a better team.
Gettysburg (1-0, 1-0 MPC) is tanked No. 7 in the state in Class 3A, and had six wrestlers in the lineup ranked in the state’s top 25. And that proved to be too much firepower for the Trojans (1-1, 0-1 MPC) — with three ranked wrestlers — to handle.
“We won six bouts; I figured we needed to win eight,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “But I’m not disappointed at all — we wrestled well. We had a very small margin for error and we had to win at 139 and 152.”
At 139, defending District 3 champion Myles Grossman, ranked No. 9, took care of the Trojans’ No. 18-ranked Ashton Romberger with an 18-3 technical fall. At 152, the Trojans’ Logan Mickey battled 18th-ranked Caleb Shearer, but could not locate a second takedown over the final minute and was defeated 5-3.
After Chambersburg’s Zach Sherman opened the match with a tech fall over Blake Haines, thanks to four takedowns, Gettysburg showed its strength, winning six of the next seven bouts, including four pins and a tech fall.
That made the score 32-8. The Trojans then won five of the next six to close the gap, but the Warriors had one more bullet left, and William Yordy ended the match with a tech fall at 121 in just 1:58.
Mentzer said, “Gettysburg has more state-ranked kids and a lot of them developed last year. We are still developing a lot of our kids. They are a good team. They’re ranked No. 7 for a reason.”
The five Chambersburg wins were posted by Isaiah Tasker, in a grinding 5-2 win in overtime at 172 over Matthew Rebert in which Tasker countered a throw attempt for the winning points; Jaccob Stoner scored an 8-0 major at 215; Frank Barrientos had three takedowns, including a 7-pointer, in a 16-3 win at 285 over Adrian Ramirez; Isaac Brambley used a 7-point move (takedown and 4-point nearfall) to win 7-2 at 107; and Cody Seabolt won an 8-0 major at 114.
Mentzer said, “Brambley’s match was between two even kids, but that 7-point move was big. Sherman beat a good kid — he just got started scoring and got on a roll.”
