GREENCASTLE — Thursday night did not have a good start for the Greencastle-Antrim girls volleyball team.

While doing pre-match warmups for a District 3 Class 3A quarterfinal match, starting Blue Devil outside hitter Wren Roberts rolled her ankle. Not only was Roberts out for the match, she is likely out for the season.

The No. 1-seeded Blue Devils, however, overcame that setback to dominate No. 9 Susquehannock (12-6) in 3 games, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19.

“The girls stepped it up, faced adversity and were able to come together and make the new lineup a success,” G-A coach Madee Goodwin said.

“Plus, we haven’t had a competition in a few days, so we were a little rusty. It took the girls a little time to get the momentum they needed.”

Greencastle (17-2) will now face No. 4 seed Big Spring in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Blue Devils’ home court. The winner qualifies for the District 3 final and the PIAA Tournament. Big Spring beat York Suburban 3-0 on Thursday.

The Blue Devils had contributions up and down the lineup. Kylie Kerns produced 9 kills, 7 service points and 10 assists for G-A, while Abby Eagler totaled 9 kills, 6 points and 7 digs.

Goodwin said, “Kylie Kerns, our setter/right-side hitter, had some big swings tonight that definitely set us ahead and helped the team be successful.”

Alaina Garling helped out with 12 assists and 7 points, Morgan Kline had 7 points and 7 digs and Hayleigh Lowe led in aces with 4 and added 5 digs. Morgan Rennekamp had 7 kills, Kinzee Hudson served for 10 points, and Emma Pool and Addison Miller each put up 2 blocks.
