HARRISBURG — The Mid Penn Conference held its golf championships on Wednesday at Dauphin Highlands and a total of 8 area golfers made the cut and advanced to the District 3 Championships.
Among the 3 boys who made it, Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney did the best, carding a 2-under par 70 to tie for first place with Miles Wilson of Hershey. Fortney birdied Nos. 4, 10 and 12, and had his only bogey on No. 15, shooting nines of 35-35.
In a playoff, Fortney parred No. 18, while Wilson sank a 10-foot putt for a birdie to win the gold medal.
Two other boys were able to qualify for districts — Shippensburg’s Ben Horgos shot 79 to tie for 14th and James Buchanan’s Abram Stock posted an 81 to tie for 19th. Horgos, with nines of 39-40, had birdies on Nos. 4 and 12, while Stock went 40-41 and birdied Nos. 6 and 18.
In the girls tournament, five local athletes competed and all five made the cut for districts — Kaydee Beckenbaugh of Ship, Emily Rensch and Alaina Morris of Chambersburg and Waynesboro’s Abby Byers and Marissa Musolino.
“Conditions were really tough to play in,” Trojan coach Mark Yost said. “The bunkers were rough (because of the recent wet weather). I’m just happy that both girls advanced.”
Beckenbaugh was the runner-up as a freshman, finishing 8 strokes behind the winner, Megan Fenton of Cumberland Valley, who shot 74. Beckenbaugh’s 82 included a birdie on No. 17 and she had nines of 43-39.
Rensch placed third with her round of 40-44–84. She had to fight to overcome three double bogeys.
Waynesboro’s Byers took 7th with her 89 (45-44, birdie on No. 14). Chambersburg’s Alaina Morris shot 100 to tie for 15th and Waynesboro’s Marissa Musolino shot 101 to tie for 19th.
Five other boys competed, but did not make the cut, including a pair from Greencastle-Antrim. Camden Eby and Dillon McDonald each shot 84, which missed the cut by just one stroke.
“I’m super proud of both of them,” G-A coach Jeremy Eby said. “They both had a very respectable postseason, finishing in the top 30 of the Mid Penn.”
Also, JB’s Taylor Blair shot 88, Chambersburg’s Brady Sites carded an 89 and Brayden Mitchell of Shippensburg shot 94.
