“The first two sets we played really well, especially for it being our first match of the season,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said.

“In the third, we made some uncharacteristic errors and ended up being down 20-8. But then we made a run, played some defense, scrambled and fought our way back to take that set. It showed the heart of our team. These kids just don’t give up.”

Marah Lehman contributed 9 kills, 2 blocks and 13 digs for Chambersburg, while Alayna Jones had 9 kills and 11 digs. Cami Bender served for 9 points and had 11 digs, while Riley Evans connected on 9 serves and had 7 kills.

Also on the stat sheets, Ava Zeigler had 8 service points and 3, Nizaya Hawkins made 3 blocks and Karley Skultety had 16 digs.

Cumberland Valley 7, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans began their season against one of the Mid Penn Commonwealth favorites and were defeated by the Eagles in a road game Monday night.

“Although the score line doesn’t reflect it, our girls were well organized behind the ball, particularly in the first 20 minutes of each half,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “Once we allowed a goal at those points, in inexperience showed in our collective reaction.”

Chambersburg trailed 3-0 by halftime.

Unruh said, “We had decent spells of possession, especially in the first half, but ultimately struggled to get numbers forward. All in all, we have some lessons to take away and build upon.”

At No. 1 doubles, the Trojan duo of Shelby Newman and Gwen Sefchek took a 6-3, 6-3 win. But Cedar Cliff was a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 2 over Gretta Hill and Julianna Small.

BOYS SOCCER
Cumberland Valley 5, Chambersburg 0: The Eagles took control after some Trojan mistakes and took a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Monday night at Trojan Stadium.

“It was a tough night,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “I thought we came out with energy, but made too many uncharacteristic mistakes and never recovered.

“CV is a top team in the district, and we need to learn from this and take positives where we can.”

The Eagles led in shots (14-5) and corner kicks (5-3). Tyson Shanholtz and Gio Barberio split five saves for Chambersburg.
