BASEBALL
Chambersburg 6, Red Land 4: The Patriots and Trojans battled for 10 innings before Chambersburg emerged with a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on Wednesday in Lewisberry.
After Red Land tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run, the Trojans scored twice in the top of the 10th. Aaron Vasquez led off with a single and, after an out, Ceagan Truett singled him to third. A fly ball to centerfield by Tyler Brechbiel enabled Vasquez to score. Then came a single by Jake Folmar and a walk to Logan Draper to load the bases, and a Joey Diaz single brought in the final run.
Harrison Benedict entered to pitch and sat the Patriots down, giving up only a walk, to earn a save. Colton Wadel got the win after pitching 5 innings in relief, allowing 3 hits and a run.
“I’m proud of the kids — we got down 3-0 early and battled back,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “Wadel did a fantastic job. He hasn’t thrown much for us, but he kept us in the game. And Benedict threw his first pitches yesterday, and came in today in a crucial situation and did the job.”
In the seventh, with the score 3-3, the Trojans had a runner thrown out at home plate. Then the Patriots had the bases loaded with one out and Chambersburg pulled off an unusual double play. A shallow fly ball to leftfielder Evan Brown got the second out. He threw home to catcher Brady Deneen, who then threw to second to catch that runner off the bag.
“It was a crazy game, and that inning was really crazy,” Folmar said.
Chambersburg (5-12, 3-10 MPC) piled up 14 hits, including 2 each by Deneen, Truett, Jake Folmar, and Diaz, and Brechbiel had 2 RBIs.
SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 9, Red Land 1: The Trojans rapped out 14 hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance by Saleen Null, to swamp the Patriots in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Norlo Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Null had a double and home run, her third of the season. Morgan Lehman was 2-for-2 with a double and drove in 3 runs. Kori Leedy belted a home run, the first of her career.
The top three players in the lineup for Chambersburg (15-3, 10-3 MPC) — Bree Paetow, Karley Skultety and Samantha Paetow — each had 2 hits and Sam Paetow had 2 RBIs.
Trojan coach Chris Skultety said, “Senior Day is always emotional and I always reflect on one of the parts I don’t look forward to — my seniors graduating. This day allows us to slow down and appreciate what these seniors have done for the program.
“This class is leaving a heck of a legacy, approaching 80 wins. That’s amazing. Thanks to Sam (Paetow), Saleen (Null), Brooke (Leedy) and Lauren (Allison). I’m glad we have more time to enjoy this ride together.”
Kori Leedy pitched the first 6 innings, giving up 7 hits and one run, while Null each pitched the final inning.
Chambersburg did not score until the third, but over the last 4 innings, scored 3, 2, 3 and 1 runs.
BOYS LACROSSE
Northern York 13, Chambersburg 12: The Trojans made a good comeback in the fourth quarter, but the Polar Bears goalie made a save just before the final horn to preserve the non-league victory at Trojan Stadium.
Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot missed the first period, but he had a good reason — his wife delivered a baby boy in the afternoon. She reportedly urged Wilmot to leave her and get to the game.
The Trojans (7-9) tied the game 4-4, but lost top defender Jackson Beardsley to an injury and the Bears went ahead 10-5 in the third period and 12-7 early in the fourth. Trailing 13-10, Chambersburg scored with 50 seconds left and 34 seconds left, and got the ball back with 20 seconds left. But the final shot was saved.
Ryan Cosey had 4 goals for Chambersburg, Logan Mulkey had 3 goals and an assist, Sam Kunkleman found the net 3 times, Riley Harmon scored twice and Eli Herbert and Quinn Makosy each had an assist.
Also, Kristian Freeman made 11 saves, Makosy had 4 caused turnovers and Makosy and Harmon each had 7 groundballs.
“We took 43 shots, but their goalie had a great game,” Wilmot said.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Northern York 13, Chambersburg 7: The Trojans got scoring from 4 different players, but it wasn’t enough to hang with the Polar Bears in a non-league game in Dillsburg on Wednesday afternoon.
“It was a hard-fought game, but we had stick skills and possession issues that cost us the win,” Chambersburg coach Keara Allshouse said. “Hopefully we can clean it up for the next game.”
For the Trojans (2-14), three players bagged 2 goals — Gabriella Sabatino, Reagan Barrett and Taylor Mickey, while Mara Costolo put in one goal.
The only assist was credited to Barrett.
