SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 3, State College 2: The Trojans trailed 2-0 after four innings and 2-1 after five, but put up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and held on to hand the Little Lions a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Wednesday afternoon in State College.
“The girls persevered today and found a way to win,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “We talked about how good teams do what they need to do when things aren’t going your way. When we got down 2-0 we could have gotten down and found excuses, but that’s not our style.”
In the fourth for State College (8-2, 3-1 MPC), Sydney Wells singled off pitcher Kori Leedy and one out later, Addison Harpster smacked a two-run homer to center to make it 2-0.
The Trojans (9-2, 4-2 MPC) got one back in the top of the fifth. Bree Paetow walked and stole second base, then raced home on a hit by Samantha Paetow.
In the sixth, Marley Onomastico led off with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kori Leedy. SC pitcher Harpster got a strikeout, then Bree Paetow hit a grounded double to right that got past the outfielder, enabling both Onomastico and the speedy Paetow to score.
Skultety said, “We left a lot of runners on base, we hit way too many fly balls and we struck out seven times. We didn’t make them make many plays. But we’re happy to get a win — this is always a tough trip and place to play.”
Kori Leedy (7-2) went the distance on the mound, allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs and 2 walks, while striking out 9 batters. Chambersburg had 5 hits and Harpster walked 7 batters.
BASEBALL
State College 6, Chambersburg 4: A 5-run fourth inning by the Little Lions proved to be the difference as they defeated the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest on Wednesday afternoon at Greene Township Park.
Chambersburg (3-8, 1-6 MPC) got a lead-off walk by Jake Folmar in the second inning, a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Vasquez and a run-scoring by Wyatt Martin. Logan Draper came up with a base hit and Brady Deneen hit a double to bring in the second run. A bases-loaded strikeout ended the threat, with a 2-1 lead.
State College (6-4, 4-3 MPO got to Trojan starter Cole Yeager for 5 runs in the fourth inning after an unearned run in the second. In the fifth, four consecutive base hits, a hit batter, an error and a sacrifice fly accounted for the outburst.
In the bottom of the seventh, needing four runs to tie, Chambersburg made it interesting by scoring twice. With one out, Evan Brown walked and a fielder’s choice moved him to second. Folmar drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
Vasquez then grounded a single to centerfield, which plated two runs, but a ground ball out ended the game.
Martin led the offense with 2 hits in 4 at-bats for the Trojans, who went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Kamden Mongan pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit while striking out 6.
