SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 13, Waynesboro 5: The Blue Devils found themselves down 5-2 after three innings after the Maidens clubbed 3 early home runs, but put together two big innings later to earn a Mid Penn Colonial victory Saturday on the road.

Solo home runs in the first inning by A. Monk and by R. Shetler in the second, plus a 3-run homer by Lydia Shank in the third inning gave Waynesboro (3-8, 1-6 MPC) the lead.

Greencastle scored twice in the top of the third when Alexis Jones walked, Meadow Gambacurta hit an RBI double with two outs and Makayla Jerin delivered a single to score Gambacurta.

In the fourth, the Blue Devils (7-2, 5-1 MPC) scored four times to take a 6-5 lead. An error and two fielder’s choice grounders preceded five consecutive singles, by Jones, Caroline Logsdon, Zhen Reuter, Gambacurta and Jerin.

Nursing that one-run lead, Greencastle put together six hits and two walks to score seven times in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away.

Paiton Gordon entered the game in relief and held Waynesboro scoreless for the final four innings. She gave up just 3 hits and no walks and struck out one. Abigail McElory suffered the loss for ‘Boro.

For Greencastle, Gambacurta was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Jerin had a 3-for-5 game with a pair of runs driven in, Logsdon was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, Reuter was 2-for-5 and Jones walked 3 times and scored 3 runs.

BASEBALL
Waynesboro 2, Greencastle-Antrim 1: Mason Gochenour threw a complete game and ignited the game-winning run to lead the Indians over the Blue Devils in a Mid Penn Colonial game on Saturday in Greencastle.

Gochenour limited G-A to just 5 hits. In the top of the seventh, Waynesboro (7-3, 6-1 MPC) got a leadoff walk, then Gochenour lifted a double over the centerfielder’s head. The next batter, Tank Benedict, hit a sacrifice fly to give ‘Boro the lead.

Greencastle (4-5, 2-4 MPC) scored its run in the fifth. Logan Shifflett led off with a single and Jarek Szaflaski was safe at first on a bunt after an error, allowing courtesy runner Cam Niland to get to third base. Garrett Decker hit a grounder to third and Niland beat the throw home.

After a wild pitch, the Blue Devils had runners on second and third, but three consecutive outs ended the threat.

“We have to be better at that,” Blue Devils coach Eric Shaner. “We had three opportunities with runners on third and less than two outs and couldn’t score them.”

In the sixth, Ethan Ford and Avery Horst started the inning with a single and walk. Carter McCauley laid down a bunt, but was called out at first (“It was a really bad blown call in a huge spot,” Shaner said). The next two batters made outs to end the inning.

The Indians made the most of just 3 hits. G-A starter Landon Huth allowed 2 in 4 innings and McCauley just one in 3 innings.
