Altoona 1, Chambersburg 0: Each team managed just 3 hits in a classic pitchers’ duel, but the Mountain Lions tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Wednesday in Altoona.
Joey Diaz pitched the first five innings for Chambersburg (2-3, 0-2 MPC), giving up only two hits, walking three and striking out five.
Tyler Brechbiel gave up a hit and a walk in the sixth and was charged with the loss. The run scored on a hit, a walk and a two-out error, the first of the game for the Trojans.
Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, “Joey was lights out on the mound. He did a great job working ahead in the count and kept their hitters off balance. Their guy did the same thing with us and we weren’t able to put much pressure on their defense.”
Altoona’s Tanner Stroup was 2-for-2, scored the winning run and pitched the first five shutout innings. Eric McAllister picked up the win with two hitless innings. The two combined to strike out 9 Trojan batters.
Evan Brown, Aaron Vasquez and Wyatt Martin had singles for the Trojans. Chambersburg got two runners to second base and only one to third.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Cumberland Valley 22, Chambersburg 4: The Trojans faced a strong team for the second straight day and took a loss to the Eagles in a Mid Penn Commonwealth contest Wednesday evening at Trojan Stadium.
“I am very proud of the grit and fight we brought to today’s game,” Chambersburg coach Keara Allshouse said. “As a team, we never stopped fighting and we left it all on the field.”
Reagan Barrett fired in 2 goals and added an assist for the Trojans (1-5, 0-2 MPC), Gabriella Sabatino had a goal and an assist, Mollie Yardley-Gontz scored a goal — her first career varsity goal — and Mara Costolo added an assist.
BOYS TENNIS
Carlisle 5, Chambersburg 0: The Thundering Herd collected wins in all five matches, including a couple of very competitive ones, to take a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans at Norlo Park on Wednesday afternoon.
At No. 3 singles, the Trojans’ Reid Leidig battled Luke Moore tooth and nail. After dropping the first set 6-3, Leidig rallied to tie it up with a 6-4 win. In the third, Moore eked out a 10-8 tiebreaker victory.
At No. 2 for Chambersburg (2-5, 1-4 MPC), Nathan Heimbach was defeated by the Herd’s Jackson Patton, 6-3, 6-2.
