BOYS: The Greencastle Blue Devils secured the Colonial Division championship by defeating Waynesboro 41-39 Friday night at Greencastle.
The game was tied 20-20 at the half. Greencastle took a 31-26 lead into the fourth quarter, but Waynesboro fought back to take a 39-38 lead with 1:26 left on the clock, Jordan Hunt hit a 3-pointer to put the Blue Devils back in the lead, 41-39. In the end, the Blue Devils held off Waynesboro to secure their win and clinch the championship.
The Blue Devils (16-3,12-1 MPC) will play at Chambersburg Saturday night at 7:30 in Dunks for Drew.
Waynesboro (9-11, 8-6 MPC) host Carlisle Tuesday at 7:30
Connor Wright led the Blue Devils with 14 points.
Kellan Smith had a game high 18 points for Waynesboro.
GIRLS: Greencastle pulled out a victory on a right-hand drive and finish by Haley Noblit with 2.5 seconds remaining to pull out a hard-fought win in a back-and-forth battle at Waynesboro 52-50.
Most of the first half belonged to Waynesboro. They controlled most of the first half by knocking down 3-pointers (6 in the first half). Led by Addie Shaull with three 3-pointers and Nikki Davis with 3 more 3-pointers, they jumped to an early lead and held off a late surge in the 2nd quarter by the Blue Devils to lead by 7 at halftime. GA got good looks in the first half but was hindered by going 0 of 8 from behind the arc and 5 of 14 from the line.
The 2nd half began with Greencastle scoring the first 7 points to tie it at 26, and from there, a back-and-forth struggle commenced. GA took its first lead with 1:47 to go 33-32 on a 3-pointer from the corner by Meadow Gambacurta and lead by 2 after 3
Not going quietly, Waynesboro surged back ahead 50 to 46 with 3:00 mins to play. That basket ended up being their final points of the evening. GA tied it at 50 with just over a minute to go. Then got a big stop and decided to hold the ball for the last 45 seconds to get the last shot. A timeout with 12 seconds to play allowed Mike Rhine to set up the final second heroics by Haley Noblit.
GA went 12 for 16 from the line in the second half.
