Southern Fulton (6-0, 4-0) got out to a five-run lead in the fifth inning and held on for a 6-4 victory over the McConnellsburg Spartans on Wednesday.
McConnellsburg scored three runs in the failed comeback on a single by Drew Mellott, a double by Jackson Clevenger, and a single by Wyatt Hershey.
The Indians earned the victory despite allowing McConnellsburg to score three runs in the seventh inning. Mellott, Clevenger, and Hershey all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.
In the first inning, Southern Fulton got their offense started when Dane Harvey singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
Paul Hendershot was on the mound for Indians. The freshman hurler lasted five innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out five and walking one.
Hershey led things off on the pitcher’s mound for McConnellsburg. The hurler surrendered four runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out one. C Gress threw two and a third innings out of the bullpen.
Southern Fulton Indians racked up nine hits. Trayton Younker and Kasey Fitz each managed multiple hits for the Indians. Fitz and Younker all had two hits to lead Southern Fulton.
McConnellsburg scattered nine hits in the game. Gavin Fowler and Clevenger all had multiple hits for McConnellsburg.
