BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 9, Waynesboro 0: Landon Huth provided a quality start and the Blue Devils had three big innings at the plate to take down the rival Indians in a Mid Penn Colonial game Wednesday afternoon in Waynesboro.
Greencastle (3-2, 2-2 MPC) recorded its second straight shutout win.
Huth went five innings, allowing 4 hits, walking two and striking out 9. Adam Horst relieved in the sixth to quell a ‘Boro threat, and Austin Simmers threw a hitless seventh inning.
“In his first varsity start, Huth was really good,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “And the defense was good behind him.”
Greencastle scored 2 runs in the third inning, 3 more in the fourth and added 4 in the sixth.
The bat of Briggs Remenick stayed red-hot — he was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Jarek Szaflarski was 2-for-4, Carter Reid hit a double and had 2 RBIs, Ethan Ford belted a two-run triple, and Aiden Grudzinski and Darren Kline each had a hit and a run batted in.
Shaner said, “It’s a really good team win. Anytime you can beat Waynesboro in hostile territory, it’s nice. We executed the little things today.”
SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 24, Waynesboro 14: It was not a good day to be a pitcher when the Blue Devils hosted the Maidens in a Mid Penn Colonial clash on Wednesday afternoon.
‘Boro scored 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 14-13 lead, but Greencastle (5-0, 4-0 MPC) retaliated in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, piling up 11 runs to end the game with the 10-run rule.
“It was nuts; I’ve never been in such a high-scoring game,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “I think it took over 2 1/2 hours.”
The sixth inning began with a walk to Alexis Jones, then an out was made. Caroline Logsdon singled and Makayla Jerin walked before a single by Meadow Gambacurta. After the second out, the next eight Blue Devils reached base.
Abby Stouffer, Sophie Layton and Bailey Leckron each hit singles. Jones then drew another walk, Sydney Orndorff singled and Logsdon was hit by a pitch. Then a base hit by Jerin and a bases-clearing triple by Gambacurta ended the game.
The offensive stats were off the chart: Gambacurta was 4-for-6 and drove in 7 runs; Jerin was 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs; Stouffer was 3-for-5 with five runs driven in; and Logsdon and Orndorff each had 2 hits.
“Our team can hit the ball,” DeCarli said. “I told them I was a little upset that they hadn’t scored more runs against Boiling Springs, and they turned around and did this to Waynesboro.”
