Carter Reid

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 12, Big Spring 6: The Blue Devils spotted the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead, but scored the next 11 runs to rack up a Mid Penn Colonial victory Tuesday afternoon in Newville in their season opener.

“We took a good punch early, and we made some mistakes — hopefully first-game stuff,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “But we stayed patient and stuck with what we’ve been telling them. We ended up with 18 hits and most of them were loud.”

Greencastle (1-0, 1-0 MPC) got two-run home runs from Carter Reid and Connor Rohm and Shaner said that four other hits smacked the outfield fence. Aiden Grudzinski and Ethan Ford both had two doubles and Austin Wyand hit one, too.

Reid could have used a double — he nearly hit for the cycle, with a triple, home run and RBI single in his first three at-bats (for 3 RBIs), and also walked twice.

Wyand, Rohm, Grudzinski, Darren Kline, Ford, Jace Szaflarski and Briggs Remenick each had two hits and Rohm, Ford and Remenick each brought in a pair of runs. Szaflarski pitched six innings to capture the victory, allowing two earned runs.

SOFTBALL
Big Spring 14, Greencastle-Antrim 4: An eight-run second inning blew the game open and the Blue Devils fell to the Bulldogs in a Mid Penn Colonial opener at G-A on Tuesday afternoon.

Trailing 9-0, Greencastle (0-1, 0-1 MPC) got three runs back in the bottom of the third, but Big Spring came right back with four in the fourth.

The Blue Devils did bang out nine hits, including two each from Meadow Gambacurta and Abby Stouffer.

Mackenzie Wingert doubled for G-A and Abbi Cunningham belted a triple. Sophia Layton suffered the defeat, but six of the Bulldogs’ runs were unearned. She struck out six, but walked seven batters.
