It all added up to a 70-54 victory over the Indians on Friday night at Waynesboro in a first-round game of the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament.

The Trojans will face James Buchanan for the championship at around 8 p.m. Saturday, while Waynesboro will play Greencastle for third place around 6:30.

“First of all, Waynesboro is a very good team, so to get out of there with a win is significant,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “I was pleased with how we responded after getting down seven in the second quarter. We carried that response into the third quarter, which was huge to create some separation.”

Waynesboro spread the scoring around in the second period to take that lead, but the Trojans stormed back at the end to tie the game, 31-31. Eli Shearer made 3 of 4 free throws and Jai’tavius Kelly gunned in a 3-pointer for the final six points of the half.

In the third, Shearer sored 7 points and Jacob Bassham hit a big three to put Chambersburg up by seven, a run that was fueled by several steals.

The Indians came back to make it close after three periods, but in the fourth, Waynesboro was outscored 21-7. Bassham posted 11 in that period, which included a key sequence with 6:35 left. He made a fast break layup, was fouled intentionally, and made both free throws to put Chambersburg ahead 56-47.

Shearer led the Trojans with 21 points and Bassham had 20, while Kelly — a freshman — added 12 and Carter Fogal knocked down a trio of 3’s for 9 points. For the Indians, Jaylon Bean racked up 18 points and Ryan Shaffer scored 13.

Shreffler said, “We need to lock in more consistently on the defensive end and be smarter on the offensive end. Additionally, our trust and connectedness must improve for us to continue adding depth and reaching our ceiling as a team.”
