Last week: The Blue Devils (1-4, 1-4 MPC) fell 27-20 to West Perry … Ship (2-3, 2-3 MPC) defeated East Pennsboro, 25-22.
The Blue Devils: Greencastle will have to play this week’s game without head coach Devin McCauley … He and his family found out Wednesday that they will be forced into being quarantined at home for up to 24 days because his middle-school age son tested positive for COVID … “It’s been quite a hectic day,” McCauley said. “But at least the team’s good and we’re allowed to move forward and play the game Friday. I run the offense and we installed that at practice Tuesday, and the defense was put in today, so that wasn’t different. I’m fortunate to have a lot of good coaches and they can handle it.” … For the second straight week, G-A was right in the game last Friday, holding a 7-point lead in the third period, but fell a touchdown short of the Mustangs … McCauley said running back Isaiah Toney-Mayhugh (9 carries, 76 yards, 2 TDs) and safety Ethan Shank played well against West Perry … Bruce Lepore is now the leading tackler with 47, while Lorcan Wright and Tyler Conrad each have 44 … Conrad has a tackle for a loss, in interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery … Offensive leaders are: Passing, Zach Cole 47-96, 484 yards, 5 TDs, 3 int.; Rushing, David Niebauer 56-246; Cameron Medina 24-195, 1 TD; Receiving, Adam Root 13-127, 3 TDs; Levi Bingaman 6-117, 2 TDs; Tevon Cooper 12-112.
The Greyhounds: Ship opened the season against the three toughest teams in the Colonial and were 0-3 … But they’ve rebounded with wins over West Perry (20-7) and East Penn … Anthony Smith, at 6-foot-6 and 255, is a bruiser at defensive end and tight end and is drawing plenty of Div. 1 interest … The most dangerous weapon on offense is QB Zach Manning to WR Isaiah Houser, which has clicked 19 times for 536 yards (28.2 yards per catch) and 4 TDs … Manning is 50-for-103, for 914 yards, 5 TDs and 4 int. … Smith has 13 catches for 210 yards and a score … Devon Wilson has carried 63 times and has 353 yards and 4 TDs, while Nathan Beam has 54 carries for 279 yards and 1 TD, plus 10 catches for 59 yards.
G-A coach’s viewpoint: McCauley said, “Ship has gotten better every week; they had kids out early and now they’re back. They’re always well-coached with a solid defense. Obviously, you have to always know where Houser is. Some teams didn’t respect his speed, but we will. And Smith is just tough, on both sides.”
