CHAMBERSBURG — Shippensburg has a talented group of young talent on its boys basketball team — the Greyhounds start one senior, two sophomores and two freshmen.

Perhaps that youth showed in the early stages of their meeting with Chambersburg in the final of three games at Saturday’s Dunks For Drew event at CASHS Field House.

The Trojans bolted to a 20-5 lead after one quarter, never let the lead get below seven, and came away with a 54-38 victory.

Ship coach Ray Staver said, “They’re as physical a team as we’ve seen, and they play that way night after night because their league (Mid Penn Commonwealth) is a notch above what we see (in the Colonial).

“Our young kids have to learn to go compete every night. Defense at the start of games has not been an issue for us, but tonight, it was.”

The Trojans (10-4) hit 8 of 12 shots in the first period, and Terell Williams scored 8 of his 14 points.

Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “There were moments when we did good things at both ends of the court. But we have to be able to do that for more extended periods of time.

“When we made mistakes, Ship capitalized on them.”

The Hounds (8-4) got a layup from Collin Taylor and a 3-pointer from Isaiah Houser to open the second half to pull within 30-23.

But Williams scored on layup and Seth Brouse drained a 3-pointer and Chambersburg gradually pulled away.

When the Hounds used a trapping defense, the Trojans made some good passes and were able to score layups for six of their nine field goals in the second half, plus a dunk.

“We handled it much better tonight,” Shreffler said, “and we took advantage of going from defense to offense quickly.”

Staver said, “We have to keep in mind that five of our top seven players are sophomores or freshmen. It was a different environment here than what we’ve been used to, and we have to grow from it.”

Taylor led Ship with 13 points and Anthony Smith had 8. Tyler Collier added 12 for the Trojans and Brouse had 9.

Shreffler said, “Taylor is very good and very efficient in the paint, but we have a 6-8 kid (Collier) to match up with him. That probably hasn’t happened much in their other games.”

NOTES: The Trojans shot 57% from the field for the game, plus made 10 of 13 foul shots.
