GREENCASTLE — The Blue Devil field hockey team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday as they hosted their annual Blue Devil Challenge tournament.  Katie Sibbio scored the games only goal off an assist from Emma Paci as the Blue Devils defeated New Oxford 1-0 to open up the day’s event.  New Oxford controlled the tempo for most of the game out shooting the Blue Devils 17 to 10 but was unable to get a shot past Blue Devil goaltender Alyssa Gaus.

“We kept fighting every time New Oxford applied pressure in the circle” said Blue Devil Head Coach Rebecca Rice.  “We ended up with a well-earned win.  Even better is the fact that we scored our goal off a corner which has been a focus for our team this season.”

Gaus recorded 15 saves in the game to earn the shutout.  New Oxford had 8 penalty corners in the game compared to 5 for the Blue Devils.

Game 2 in the tournament saw the Blue Devils record their second shutout of the day.  Ellie Strait and Emma Paci each scored as Greencastle defeated visiting Gettysburg by a 2-0 score.

Strait got the Blue Devils off to a quick start beating Gettysburg goaltender Emily Scavitto just 42 second into the game.  Bella Facchina assisted on the first goal.  Paci provided an insurance goal midway through the second half off an assist from Katie Sibbio.

“We started the game with intensity and took control of the game for the rest of the day” said Rice.  “My forwards worked very well together to create passing opportunities and my midfielders and defenders stepped up to each ball.”

Gaus made 7 saves in the second game to pick up shutout number two on the day. The Blue Devil field hockey team is now 2-1 on the season and is back in action on Monday as they host Chambersburg at 4pm.
