CHAMBERSBURG — The Chambersburg girls soccer team continued its winning streak to begin the season, moving to 3-0 by holding off Carlisle, 2-1, in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Tuesday night.

Gabby Lecuona netted both of Chambersburg’s goals, getting the first on a header — from Layne Kimple — 5:15 before halftime. In the 56th minute, she doubled the Trojans’ lead, scoring after a pass from Alex Cottingham.

The Herd got a goal back when Meg Tate scored with five minutes left.

Carlisle led in shots, 14-8, but Chambersburg goalkeeper Faith Johnson made 13 saves.

Trojan coach Ed Franchi said, “The defense played extremely well again, holding Meg Tate and Liz Weis in check most of the time, not giving them clean shots. Emily Mort and Ashley Bawell played outstanding games, and Gabby Lecuona made the most of her chances. I’m very proud of how hard the team is playing.”

BOYS SOCCER

“It was a hot one!” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “Playing conditions were rough, but as we’ve been preaching all preseason, no excuses regardless of the situation. The boys really grinded all game.  I’m very pleased with the outcome even though there are many things still to improve on.  It’s always a positive when we don’t play our best but get a positive result.”

Omario Duncan tallied two goals for the Trojans (2-0, 1-0 MPC), netting one in the seventh minute and another in the 39th, giving him five goals in two games.

Andrew Quach scored a goal on a penalty kick and had an assist, Tyler Luther had an assist, and the Trojans also scored on an own goal by the Herd.

Chambersburg led in shots, 13-3, and in corner kicks, 6-2. Garrett Carter made four saves in goal.

“This was a good team win and we showed a lot of heart after losing the first set,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “We served very well, which kept them out of system. It was a good start to the season.”

Trojan coach Mark Yost said, “It was a little closer than usual, so it’s becoming more competitive and that’s good. Karsen was 4-over at one point and brought it back, and he had a putt on his last hole to go to even par.”

James Buchanan’s Caleb Reath took the runner-up spot with a 78, followed by Waynesboro’s Devin Smith with an 81 for third place.

Also at 83 in a tie for fifth with Norcross and Hopple were Shippensburg’s Adam Maring and Amanda Steier of Greencastle-Antrim. Ella Lowry of Waynesboro was two strokes back.

Waynesboro was second in the team standings, JB was fourth, G-A fifth and Ship seventh.

Palmyra 3, Chambersburg 2: The Cougars were able to capture both doubles matches and squeaked out a non-league victory over the Trojans.

“It was a tough pill to swallow,” Chambersburg coach Josh Barwin said. “The girls fought hard, but Palmyra outlasted us. We’ll learn from our mistakes.”
