Chambersburg rdp 9/1: Soccer teams open with victories

GETTYSBURG — Omario Duncan hit the back of the net three times to carry Chambersburg’s boys soccer team to a season-opening 3-1 non-league over Gettysburg on Saturday.

Duncan scored in the 49th, 55th and 78th minute for the Trojans. Garrick Hill, Tyler Luther and Luke Myers earned assists on the goals.

“The boys took a while to settle in (only 4 shots in the first half), but then we looked good (19 shots in the second half),” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “Gettysburg has a solid squad that was difficult to break down, but once we started possessing the ball, better opportunities came.”

The Trojans out-shot the Warriors 23-4 and led in corner kicks, 8-5.

Grove said, “I was very pleased with it being our first game, especially with Omario putting in a good shift and getting his hat trick.”

In the championship game of the Trojan Cup on Saturday evening, the Trojans got the game-winning goal with 1:13 left in the second overtime.

Chambersburg’s goal came on a 1-2 punch of freshmen forwards, when Brooke Huntsman passed to Lindsey Swanger, who scored the winner.

Gabby Lecuona opened the scoring for the Trojans in the first half on a goal by Gabby Lecuona, from Payton Guyer.

“We lost two starting defenders in the second half to injury, so we had to shuffle the lineup some,” Trojan coach Ed Franchi said. “Ashley Bawell and Emily Mort played outstanding in the second half, and Faith Johnson also played well in goal.”

Johnson made 12 saves, as the Lions out-shot Chambersburg, 12-4.

Franchi said, “It was a very tough game, but the girls played hard.”

Chambersburg 7, Susquehanna Twp. 1: The Indians scored the first goal just 5:35 into the game, but the Trojans led 3-1 by halftime and rolled to a win in the first round of the Trojan Cup Tournament.

Gabby Lecuona evened the score less than two minutes later, then proceeded to score three more goals in a row. The final goals were scored by Layne Kimple, Hana Bellows and Lindsey Swanger.

Gianna Weigel provided three assists, Kimple notched two and Lecuona and Bellows each had one helper.

Goalkeeper Faith Johnson made three saves.

Trojan coach Ed Franchi said, “We gave up a goal early, then started possessing the ball well. We connected a lot of passes and made some real nice through balls.”
