Last Friday was a joyous occasion for the Chambersburg football team. Its 48-13 win over Greencastle-Antrim broke a 19-game losing streak and gave considerable hope for what could happen in the 2018 season.

But, as coach Mark Luther said, “We’ve been reminding the kids all week — last week was great, but last week was last week. They have to understand that good teams have to continue to get better each week.”

This Friday, the Trojans host the South Western Mustangs of the York-Adams league in a non-league tussle at 7 p.m. at Trojan Stadium.

South Western, a new addition to the Chambersburg schedule, was beaten 42-6 by Gettysburg last week.

Luther said, “We know Gettysburg is a team with a lot of good athletes. South Western started all seniors on offense last week and quite a few on defense, so they have experience.”

Starting quarterback Derek Huff was 0-for-6 with an interception, so Jalen Bradford came into the game and was more effective — 1-for-3, 23 yards and a pick, and also ran for 30 yards and a touchdown.

“The starter is a big kid (6-foot-5, 215) who is more of a prototype pocket passer,” Luther said. “The kid they brought in is more athletic, more of a runner, and he played at halfback, too. We have to be aware of where he is.”

The Mustangs run a wing-T offense.

Luther said, “We have to focus, do our jobs and do the little things right. Hopefully, the defense can create more takeaways this week.”

Against Greencastle, Chambersburg forced five turnovers, and the offense turned every one of them into a touchdown.

On offense, QB Brady Stumbaugh was 9-for-13 for 135 yards and four touchdowns, running back Keyshawn Jones ran for 156 yards on 17 carries and scored one TD, and tight end Terrell Williams had three catches for 72 yards and a pair of scores.

H-backs Kyere Morton and Tanner Hunt each broke up the middle through a big hole for a long touchdown, and Andrew Shetter and Garner Funk each snagged a TD pass.

But Luther said some of the best work was put in by guard Tucker Karn and tight end/defensive end Funk.

“Karn is starting for the third year and that was by far the best game he’s had,” Luther said. “And Funk had some great effort at defensive end. Everybody sees the obvious — the guys who touch the ball — but we had lots of other guys play well. Tucker Perry had some really big hits and big tackles.

“After watching the film, I’m pretty sure it was the best team effort we’ve had since I’ve been here, so a shout out to the entire team.”

Luther is hoping this weekend’s film session is just as much fun to watch.

NOTES: For the Mustangs, Anthony Soriano ran 7 times for 111 yards, Austin Fuhrman was 6 for 42 yards and Kyle Stanton caught a pass for 23 yards vs. Gettysburg … South Western, which is in Hanover, was led in tackles by Connor Wilson (7) and Fuhrman (6).
