NEFFSVILLE — Chambersburg got off to a fine start, but Governor Mifflin won three straight games to end the Trojan boys volleyball team’s season Wednesday night.
Chambersburg, which finishes 10-9, won the first set, 25-23, in the District 3 Class 3A consolation match at Manheim Township H.S. But the Mustangs took the next three, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18, to capture the victory.
Gov. Mifflin will play for fifth place and a berth in the PIAA Tournament on Friday.
“Unfortunately, our season fell short on a match filled with mistakes,” Trojan coach Paul Schlabach said. “Even though volleyball is a game of mistakes, Governor Mifflin was able to recover from their mistakes much better than we were.”
Josiah Picard led Chambersburg with 11 kills, Trey Stepler had 10 and Will Simmers 9. Ty Holsopple made 4 blocks and Picard had 2 aces. In digs, Trey Stepler had 20, Picard 12, and Kellen Stepler and Dylan Culler 11 each.
Schlabach said, “In some ways it was a disappointing finish to a good season; I definitely thought we would be able to be competitive and potentially win the consolation bracket to make it to the state playoffs.
“On the other hand, I am really proud of what the boys accomplished with only two seniors on the team (Culler, Kellen Stepler). I know next year the team has a lot of potential to go far.”
