Softball: JB takes second at Central York

Central York’s Courtney Coppensmith is a very good softball pitcher and the James Buchanan Lady Rockets found out just how good.

Coppensmith threw a no-hitter and struck out 15 of the 16 Lady Rocket batters she faced in Central York’s 1-0 rain-shortened five-inning victory Saturday in the championship game of the Central York tournament.

Coppensmith struck out the side in every inning and her only blemish was a leadoff walk to Maddie Bailey in the fifth. Central York scored an unearned run the bottom of the fifth off  JB’s Jenna Mongold, who scattered 4 hits and struck out 7.

“Jenna pitched well against an undefeated and top ranked Class 6A team,” JB coach Troy Pittman said.

JB (7-3) reached the championship by beating Susquenita 8-2. Lizzie Pittman pitched a complete-game 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts and gave up only 1 earned run.

Alyssa Blair led the Lady Rockets with 4 hits while Mongold and Bailey each had 3 and Grace Amsley and Paige Doyle each had 2.
