It wasn’t fancy, but the James Buchanan Lady Rocket softball team will take it.
Of all things, a bases loaded walk was all James Buchanan needed in its 1-0 win over the Big Spring Lady Bulldogs in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game Tuesday.
The Rockets plated the games only run in the bottom of the fourth. Krystin Nichols led off with a single and moved to second on an error. After 2 outs, Maddie Bailey was hit by pitch and Jenna Mongold walked to load the bases. Maria Burkett then drew another walk to bring Nichols home.
“We struggled on offense,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “We didn’t have to much solid contact which I credit to the Big Spring pitcher.”
Mongold earned the complete-game victory for JB (6-1, 5-1 MPC). She scattered 4 hits and struck out 7. Big Spring threatened in the top of the sixth when it loaded the bases with one out, but Mongold ended the threat with consecutive strike outs.
“Jenna pitched well,” Pittman said. “She threw 105 pitches, 70 for strikes. This was another typical Colonial Division game. It was well played, well pitched and we did just enough for a victory.”
JB hosts Shippensburg at 4:30 on Thursday with first place on the line.
