Trailing the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils heading into the top of fourth inning, the Waynesboro Maidens did not panic. After all, they trailed Big Spring 11-1 on Tuesday and came all the way back to win that one. A 5-3 deficit didn’t seem that bad. Two innings later, the Maidens were leading 10 to 5 and never looked back.
Exploding for three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth, Waynesboro (6-1/3-1) turn the tide quickly against the Blue Devils. Not only did their offense do the job, but the pitching and the defense were able to hold GA (3-3/2-2) scoreless during those middle two innings, the only two innings the Blue Devils didn’t score.
The Blue Devils fought back into the game, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth, but the Maidens answered with two runs of their own to open up a five run lead going into the bottom half of the inning. Baylee Schaeffer opened up the bottom of the seventh with a blast over the center field fence to cut the margin by four, by the three straight outs ended the ballgame in favor of the Maidens.
Waynesboro’s top of the order did most of the damage, lead by Alexis Rosenberry’s three hits and five RBI’s. Jenna Powell followed her in the lineup and went three for five also with three RBI. In all, the Maidens pounded out 15 hits in the win, with five doubles. Rosenberry was responsible for two of the extra base hits.
Except for the fourth and fifth innings, the Blue Devils’ bats were alive, also. They totaled 13 hits in all, as Hannah Beeler had the hot bat, collected three hits. Olivia Remenick had two hits, both doubles. Allison Reitz recorded a triple along with the Schaeffer home run.
Caitlyn Pollock recorded the win from the mound for the Maidens, going four innings, walking one and striking out one, while giving up five runs off seven hits. Lauren Hunsecker finished the job on the mound, pitching the remaining three innings, striking out two while giving up six hits and three runs.
Remenick suffered the loss for the Blue Devils, going all seven innings. She struck out five and walked four.
The Blue Devils jump back into action Friday with a non-league home contest with the Northeastern Bobcats. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 pm. Waynesboro returns to action on Saturday with an 11:00 am game with non-league foe Red Lion.
