The Shippensburg Greyhounds fell behind quickly and couldn’t dig themselves out of a deep hole against Commonwealth power Harrisburg in the Mid-Penn Tournament 66-28 at Cumberland Valley High School.
Harrisburg will play Keystone Champion Lower Dauphin, a 43-25 winner over Capital champion Trinity, at Central Dauphin on Thursday at 6:00pm.
The Greyhounds broke the Harrisburg press well early but couldn’t get any shots to drop. They had good shots but couldn’t get any offensive rebounds which allowed the Cougars to get out on the break and score at will. They led 36-13 at the half and a late 11-0 run sealed the win.
“We had some good shots early but they didn’t fall,” Greyhound coach Andrew Markel said. “We had some freshmen come out and really step up but we put ourselves in a hole early when we couldn’t make shots. Emelie Nonemaker is a streak shooter and tonight she hit a few and passed on a few I would have liked her to shoot.”
Nonemaker had 12 points to lead the Greyhounds.
Shippensburg will prepare for Spring Grove, their first round opponent in the District 3 Class 5A Tournament next Tuesday at Spring Grove.
“If we can get by Spring Grove, we are guaranteed four more games this season, so it would be nice to win Tuesday,” said Markel.
